Piano Key Sign

1/24/2022

One of my coworkers decided she was going to get rid of her old piano. No one really wanted it and it wasn't in the "best" shape according to music people so she decided she wanted to take it apart! Mostly just for fun but also to see what she could get from the scrapyard for it, because, why not! Knowing that I love to repurpose things, she asked me if I would want the keys and of course I said yes! I turned it into one of classes at the library and it was a hit! Everything I used we already had stashed at work. Random things that had just been sitting around for a while and you know how much I love using that stuff!
First off, I don't know if everyone knows this, but a piano key is actually a lottttt longer than you think it is. The "key" part is what we see when we sit down to play but here's a very long wooden piece attached to the back which is what is utilized to hit the hammers to hit your notes! Cool!

But... I just wanted the keys... so... que the husband! (Not that I couldn't have done it myself but sometimes it's just nice to have help!) He sawed off all those long pieces for me which was sooooooo super nice of him ;) I sanded these down a bit more because they got a little sharp (ha) on the ends and then I also cleaned them because boy were they dirty!
I chose the keys that I wanted to use for mine and lined them up how I thought they should go.

I used a smaller, about a 6x8, piece of cardboard for the focal point of the craft. I used sheet music to cover this piece of cardboard for something eye-catching. I chose to rip it up into pieces and glue it down, but when I did this a second time, I chose to glue down the sheet music as it is normally. Then, I glued down my keys with hot glue, making sure they would lay nice and even (I had to rip them off at some point because it was crooked, what a mess!).

I was using a matt frame with a cardboard backing to create the frame part of the project. I glued down a piece of scrapbook paper that I liked to go with the whole thing then I mapped out where the backing would need to be glued so that the paper would look straight in the background.
Picture
Picture
Then, I glued on the focal piece with the keys, being sure to press down with some force to secure it.
Picture
I thought the matt frame looked a bit boring and decided to add a little quote that I found online. I added a piece of cardboard to the back of this to give it some height and then some black paper to form a border around the words. Lastly, I finished it up by adding a sawtooth hanger to the back and it was perfect!

Blackbird Box

1/10/2022

This craft was very similar to my spooky Halloween post from September but I still thought I'd share because, why not! This craft was to go along with the book "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" for our millennial book discussion where we do a craft to match the book! We had a stash of these cardboard craft boxes and, as usual, I wanted to do something that didn't cost us anything and this is what I came up with!
I started by grabbing random scrapbook paper scraps (yes, I keep those!) and began piecing them together with mod podge to create this cool, almost Sally-looking pattern on the bottom half of the  box. I kept going until the whole thing was covered, including the bottom. Around the top edge you may have to trim some pieces away so the box can still shut or us a piece of sand paper to smooth out the edges.

Next, I printed out a black and white vintage clipart image of a blackbird and mod podged that to a white chipboard coaster I had from a previous craft. Then I hot-glued this to the center of the lid.
Picture

I crumbled up pieces of tissue paper and glued that around the center image. Once dry, I then painted all of the tissue paper black and distressed the white blackbird image by lightly brushing my paintbrush across the coaster (putting a little more pressure around the sides. I ended up doing the same to the scrapbook paper on the bottom of the box, not pictured).

Lastly, I finished up the box by adding fun "things" to the top! I used moss (leftover from our wedding!), old jewelry, buttons, beads, marbles, Halloween pieces, etc. to make a really interesting top! For this program we left the inside of the box blank but you could really do a lot to it!

Trinket Box

I don't know if you saw my post on making Harry Potter wands but they were pretty awesome sauce if I do say so myself! The box I used for them came from a gentleman at work who likes to give me random things to use for my crafts. Well, he gave me some of the same style of box but they were double the width (if that makes sense). So I had to come up with something to do with them! I have a lot, so it will take a few different crafts to use them up, but, to start, I came up with this simply pretty trinket box!
Supplies I used:
  • Cardboard box
  • Book pages
  • Mod Podge
  • Paint brush for glue
  • Scrapbook pages
  • Scissors
  • Printed quote
  • Vinyl/fabric piece
  • Various embellishments
I had some of our staff at work help me with the prep for these. I had them paint the outside and inside of the lid as well as the inside of the box white. I did this because I knew the paper I was going to be using on the top wouldn't completely cover the green and I thought was a little too much to show through and thought white would be a softer choice.
Picture

If you noticed, I didn't say the outside of the bottom part of the box. That is because I used a decoupage method with book paper to cover it instead! I ripped up pieces of old book pages that were nice and yellow looking! Then I put a think layer of mod podge on the box, section by section, and laid the pages into the glue. I brushed over the pages as well to make sure they stuck to to the box completely. I also covered the bottom of the box completely with book pages as well.
Next, I chose a few different types of scrapbook paper that had fun and bright patterns. I measured and cut them into pieces that could be quickly glued onto the different areas. I started with the inside of the box, as I figured that'd be the easiest, and again, laid down some mod podge to glue the paper on. I had this cool vinyl fabric (also from my donating buddy) which on the back had a soft fluffy backing and decided I wanted that for the inside of my box. I glued this down with hot glue to make sure it stayed in place unless someone purposely rips it out!

I decided to cover the outside and inside of the lid with two different types of paper which I thought was really fun. If you attempt this project or something similar, make sure when you glue paper down that you get the air bubbles out and really smooth it out with something! It will settle better when it dries verses what it looks like when wet!
The next part is the really fun part! So, I did this for a virtual work program. This means that I made up prepacked "craft kits" that the participants picked up ahead of time. This included the box, soft vinyl, quote pieces, and embellishments. The quote I made for the box reads, "wherever life plants you, bloom with grace". I ended up adding another quote for the side of the box that read, "be humble and kind". I wanted these to be a little bit nicer than just gluing copy paper on the box, so I first glued them to a thin matt board and cut them out. Adding changes like this adds depth and texture to projects! The embellishments I included in the boxes ranged from all sorts of mismatched stuff such as: buttons, lace, ribbon, floral leaves, jewels, stickers, clip art, broken jewelry, feathers, etc. People are also always encouraged to add things they may have at home too.
I laid out my quote pieces until I had them where I thought I liked them and glued them down with hot glue. I then started playing with my embellishment pieces. I have to say... this was shockingly hard! I could not decide where I wanted things and kept moving items back and forth and back again! Slowly, I started feeling happier with what I picked out for each item and began gluing them down, although apprehensively!

Essentially, to finish the box up, just keep fenagling with it until you feel happy! You can also always add more items later too, especially if you have something that is uniquely special in some way. Thanks for reading & crafting!

Butterfly Book Banner

6/28/2021

I have always, always loved butterflies. I became particularly attached to them when my elderly babysitter passed away when I was little. I remember.. or at least this is the story that's in my head.. that when she passed I made a wish for her to come back to me as a butterfly. And, lo and behold,  the next day I was outside playing and a butterfly landed right next to me. Now, do I think it was quite a coincidence with it being spring and all that a butterfly would be flying around on a bright, sunny, April day, maybe. But to my little eyes and heart, it was her.

I was looking for a simple craft that booklovers would (hopefully) love to make and came up with this sweet craft involving book pages, butterflies, and bright fabric scraps. Below are my step by step instructions to make it, enjoy!
Picture
Supplies:
  • INSTRUCTIONS
  • TWINE
  • BOOK PAGES
  • SCRAPBOOK PAPERS
  • FABRIC STRIPS
  • TEMPLATES
  • SCISSORS
  • GLUE

1. Lay out all your supplies to get organized 😊 I made a template for both the pennant and the butterflies so that they'd all be the same size. Trace your book page banner shapes and the butterflies. Then cut them all out.
Picture
Picture
Picture
2. Glue your banner book pages onto the twine by first folding the top over for a crease. Then, lay a line of glue (I used a glue stick) across the crease. While holding the twine in place, fold over the smaller top piece and press it into the glue.
Picture
Picture
3. Once you have all your banner pages glued down, you can then glue down all your butterflies in whatever arrangement you would like.
Picture
4. Lastly, add your scrap fabric, ribbon, etc. in between each banner. You can tie it with a loop or a regular knot. That’s it 😊

Look how cute!

Yarn Bouquet aka Pom Pom Flowers

5/17/2021

Picture
Are you looking for something cute and fun for these summer days ahead? Really this craft can be done for any season or holiday, let's be honest, but I think they are particularly cute for summer! It is a very simple and relatively quick craft that just about anyone can do. If you have littles wanting to help, just make sure you supervise cutting and that you handle the hot glue of course!
Supplies for flowers:
  • Yarn of various colors
  • Wooden sticks
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue

Supplies for upcycled vase:
  • Tin can
  • Patterned Paper
  • Embellishments
  • Floral Foam
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue

Picture
1. To start, take your yarn and start with wrapping an end around something. Some people use a fork, cardboard, etc. But I think it’s easiest using your 4 fingers. Keep wrapping until you have the amount you want.  The more you have = the bigger the flower!
2. Using a smaller piece of the yarn, string it through perpendicular around the whole wrapped chunk and tie it tightly.
Picture
3. Pull your tied chunk off whatever surface you are using and begin cutting the looped pieces all the way around the shape.
Picture

It should look something like this…
4. Next, trim around the yarn to make it more even all the way across, we’ll be trimming more as we go.
Picture
Picture
5. Now, you can choose if you want to “fluff out” your pom pom. You can do this by using a small comb, pet comb, fork, (something with teeth). And begin “combing” into the strands so they get fluffy. This will get messy…
This image below shows you the difference between "fluffing" and not fluffing...
Picture
Picture
6. It will look pretty uneven, so just trim around the yarn all over again 😊 Do this step with each of your pom pom flowers.
Picture
Picture
7. Next, using hot glue, glue each of your “flowers” on top of the wooden sticks.  I had 6 sticks but cut 3 of them down to smaller sizes so that they would be at different heights! You're all done with your pom pom flowers at this point!
Picture
Picture
8. I decided I wanted to do a little something extra with this craft and wanted something to put the "flowers" in. I'm all about "upcycling" stuff and I had tin cans lying around that I thought would make the perfect recycled and rustic vase for these! So, take a tin can and cover it with a complimentary scrapbook paper.
Picture
9. Then, add some embellishments of your preference such as lace, ribbon, buttons, etc. to jazz up the "vase".
10. Lastly, plop a piece of floral foam into the bottom of your tin can and stick your flowers into it and you're done!

Chipboard Coaster Scrapbook

4/15/2020

Picture
This is a quick project that you can give as a gift with pictures already in it or left empty for the person to fill. They're super cute and itty bitty! Something fun and different to brighten up any day.
Supplies:
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Mod Podge and various glues
  • Ruler
  • Embellishments
  • Chipboard Coasters (available in bulk on Amazon)
  • Old paintbrush
  • Binder ring or other option
  • Sand paper
  • (I also used a drill but we'll get to why later)
1. The first step for this itty bitty project is gathering all your supplies because there's a lot of potential components. I like to gather everything up that way I have all the supplies necessary near me and ready to go. This is where I picked my color scheme for my scrapbook (I used scraps from my scrap bag) and came up with yellow, grey, and navy. Pretty! I also gathered a pile of random stickers and other embellishments (I had no idea what I would use!).
Picture
Picture
2. I then traced the coasters onto the backs of the scrapbook paper I would use for the main sheets so I could cut them out to size.
Picture
Picture
Picture
3. I decided the order of the pages that I wanted and laid them out on the coasters. Next, I glued the sheets onto the coasters using the Mod Podge and a paint brush. I did half at a time instead of trying to glue the whole sheet at once, that way I could be more aware of bubbles showing up.
Picture
Picture
4. Once you glue them all down, go back through and reinforce any loose corners that may be sticking up.
5. Trim any paper that is hanging over the edges and lightly sand the edges so that it molds to the coaster base.
Picture
Picture
6. Start to plan out your pages by laying out the pieces and parts that you want to include before you officially glue anything down!
Picture
Picture
7. Mod Podge dries pretty quick so this part of the project will go fast. You can use a hot glue gun for heavier/awkward objects to secure them to the boards.

8. Looks super cute, right?! Well, this is where I realized... oh crap... how do I hold it together?! I looked up some ideas and liked the nonrestrictive binder ring option. But, this meant there needed to be holes for the ring to pass through. I decided to use a drill as this was the only option we had to my knowledge that could accomplish this. I think if I had some sort of press that would have been the way to go! I drilled through and it slightly tore up my paper! Ugg not cool!
Picture
Picture
I am going to be doing this for an upcoming work program so decided to create holes in all 125 coasters... yay!... that way they are done ahead of time instead of afterwards. Still, I do not think this is the best option... it seems to tear through the chipboard (these are really flimsy chipboard!) and I encourage you to find a better way if possible :) It still turned out cute overall!
